Copper alloy guard, with blade and tang fragment, probably from the hilt of an Iron Age or Roman dagger of 1st century AD date. Sub-oval in plan with a truncated conical top widening on either side to form the wings of the guard. The upper face of the wings curve up slightly at either end whilst the centre is raised in a smooth ogive shaped arch. The base of the guard is flat, around which there are three parallel decorative moulded bands. An incomplete, copper-alloy strap fitting of the Roman period (AD 45-450).
The object is in the form of three circular inset heads in trefoil shape, each having a central rivet or bud. At the base of the trefoil is a shank of two short sides and a horizontal bar. The decoration on the object has been punched, forming depressed pellets. On the reverse is a stud behind the upper part of the trefoil, with similar decoration on the heads. A Roman copper-alloy contemporary copy of a nummus of Constantine II, AD 354-361. On the obverse the bust facing right is a poor qaulity copy. Most of the inscription is missing or unclear. The reverse side has a soldier holding a fallen horseman, and only the inscription is mostly unreadable apart from ATIO, from the original inscription of FEL TEMP REPARATIO.
