A fragment of copper alloy Roman brooch consisting of the lower bow and catchplate only, probably of Colchester two-piece or Colchester derivative type, dating to c. AD 25 - 150. The catchplate extends behind the lower bow and is triangular in shape with an openwork central ring, a sub-triangular area below and irregular four-sided area above (with one concave edge). The curl of the catchplate (22.5mm in height) is slightly damaged near the foot, which is decorated to the front with a transverse groove. The bow extends a little way above the catchplate. An incomplete two- or four-disc post-medieval (c.1600-1700) lead cloth seal for alnage/ subsidy. It consists of disc one only, rather oval in shape with the rivet to the reverse squashed to one side. The cloth seal depicts a crowned rose with the letters L S to either side and the remains of an inscription around the edge, reading from right to left [....]HOP or [....]HOF The rivet to the reverse is stamped with the remainder of the letters AB or perhaps AR or AP. An incomplete post-medieval (1500-1800) copper alloy strap fitting or dress hook, consisting of an incomplete lozengiform plate and an incomplete curving projection. The plate (max.3.2mm thick) is flat to the reverse but has moulded decoration to the front in the form of a forward-facing visage of a cherub with wings to either side. The cherub's face is oval in shape with horizontal hollows for the eyes; the wings are decorted with diagonal ribs, angled upwards and away from the face on either side.
