Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast tapered flat-sided weight. Sand imprints on one larger flat side and the adjoining narrower sides indicate this was cast in a sand bed. Patinated. The mass suggests this may have represented three units of 4.07gms or one half ora/ore, as used in Viking-Age Scandinavia for transactions in silver bullion. Weights respecting this and allied systems of measurement were probably common; those representing uneven numbers of units are rarer than even numbers. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Length: 19.2mm, Width: 13.7mm, Thickness: 7.6mm, Weight: 12.19gms
