Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman brooch dating from the first or second century AD. Only the foot of the brooch remains, with a short length of the lower bow. There is a raised ridge or spine running down the bow which narrows and terminates in a raised collar. Below this is a sub-rectangular panel which is decorated with a moulded ring and dot motif. A large catchplate survives on the reverse of the brooch. The class of brooch is difficult to determing - the central ridge is quite unusual, and is sometimes seen on trumpet-style brooches.

The coins is sub-square, which is often seen on coins of this period. The reverse is very wornbut appears to depict a female standing left. Bases on the profile image of the emperor, this may be Marcus Aurelius (AD 161-180), however both emperors look very similar.

A complete lead alloy token, gaming piece or possible tessera of probable Roman date. The token is sub-square in plan and one face has been stamped with an image of a radiate-crowned male facing right, enclosed within a square border. The bust appears to be draped, and the facial features crude and mostly indistinct - it looks like a ruler of the later third century AD, bearing similarities to images of Carausius or Postumus seen on coins of the period. The reverse of the token is flat, plain and undecorated, but bears some scratches / linear indentations. Lead tesserae and moun…

An incomplete cast copper alloy object, probably a penannular brooch of Fowler's Type G and dating to the late Roman / early Anglo-Saxon period (c. AD 300-500). The object has a circular cross section around the incomplete hoop, which extends into a rectangular and square-ended terminal with a singluar ring-and-dot motif on the terminal. There is an L-shaped projection at right-angles to the terminal; this projection is damaged but was probably mirrored on the opposing side of the brooch which is now broken and missing. The hoop is decorated on one side only with sets of four in…
