Broad period: IRON AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fine grained compacted pale sandstone whetstone fragment. The remaining fragment is sub-rectangular and rounded on the unbroken face. There are four smooth surfaces worn on the unbroken face, and the object appears to have been used to sharpen small implements, such as knives. The object fits comfortably into the palm of the hand for the purpose of sharpening implements. The use of probable local stone for sharpening stones is characteristic of the period between the later Iron Age and the middle Saxon period. Other finds from the site would probably make a Roman or later date most …

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Neolithic polished flint axehead (c. 4000 BC-c. 2351 BC).
The butt end is missing due to an oblique break.
This axehead is sub-rectangular in plan, roughly 'V'-shaped in side view and pointed oval in cross-section. Towards the truncated oblique butt end it becomes more rounded in cross-section. It has been bi-facially flaked all over and then partially ground and polished. It is possible that the cutting edge broke and was then re-worked and modified for a specific function.
The surfaces, including the break at the butt, have a shiny off-white patina with reddis…

Incomplete medieval copper alloy object, possibly a book or buckle fitting, dating to the period c. AD 1100 - 1250. Rectangular plate with flat back and a single rivet hole in one corner. This corner has now curled upwards, probably due to post-depositional damage. It exhibts two very straight break lines and appears to have been deliberately broken from a larger object. The front exhibits a moulded relief design of a wyvern, head turned to look back, one front leg raised. Behind it appears to be a larger curved object with moulded annulet decoration. The two surviving original edges e…

An almost complete but broken copper alloy early medieval small-long brooch, dating from the early 5th to 6th century AD. The brooch is now in two pieces, and missing the pin. The brooch has a rectangular head-plate, with an arched bow extending out from the longer edge. Either side of the arch is a slight raised collar. There are scratches in the centre of the bow, which are possibly decoration. The bow then starts to widen out to the lozenge shaped foot, this is where the worn break occurs.
