Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Brown fine-grained sandstone water-rolled cobble, hammerstone. An oval cobble with an ancient chip towards one end, subsequently smoothed by wave, water or erosive wind action. The narrower end bears a zone measuring c.50mm by c.40mm of tiny indentations which appear pale r and rougher than the rest of the surface. The finder credibly suggests this to result from the use of this object as a hard hammer to work flint, and the object was indeed reported along with a range of flint-working debris. As most of this accompanying material is ascribed a Late Mesolithic date, this seems apt he…

Grey flint with cortex debitage. Two flakes, one larger [length 43.5mm] and of sub-triangular shape, the other smaller [length: 21.7mm]. Both have had broad flakes struck from their dorsal sides by hard hammer, and both have slightly concave ventral surfaces. The larger flake bears thick white patina indicating it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. The smaller flake lacks this, and was perhaps in a sealed context until recently. Grey flint with cortex debitage. Three small flakes. One has ancient creamy patina so thick as to constitute cortex, which has developed over previously struck surfaces, to be itself removed by subsequent hard hammer impact. This and another, similar, flake have a bulbar ventral surface over which misty patina indicates exposure to a calcareous environment. A third flake bears scars from the removal of broad flakes from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface. In this case, only one end of the object bears misty patina suggesting exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date…

Grey translucent flint of good quality with cortex strip, appearing honey coloured under transmitted light; backed blade. A small narrow flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a small bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect may follow one long edge, though these small scars might have arisen from adventitious impacts. The retention of cortex on the opposite long edge, however, may show this to be deliberate. There is no patina, in contrast to most of the accompanying material. Sugge…
