A fine grained compacted pale sandstone whetstone fragment. The remaining fragment is sub-rectangular and rounded on the unbroken face. There are four smooth surfaces worn on the unbroken face, and the object appears to have been used to sharpen small implements, such as knives. The object fits comfortably into the palm of the hand for the purpose of sharpening implements. The use of probable local stone for sharpening stones is characteristic of the period between the later Iron Age and the middle Saxon period. Brown fine-grained sandstone water-rolled cobble, hammerstone. An oval cobble with an ancient chip towards one end, subsequently smoothed by wave, water or erosive wind action. The narrower end bears a zone measuring c.50mm by c.40mm of tiny indentations which appear pale r and rougher than the rest of the surface. The finder credibly suggests this to result from the use of this object as a hard hammer to work flint, and the object was indeed reported along with a range of flint-working debris.
