Record ID: CORN-069A5C
Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Dolphin-type hinged brooch with pairs of leaf-like mouldings down each side of the bow. The pin is missing but the iron hinge remains at the centre of the back of the wide cross-bar, and the iron spindle within the tubular wings. The cross-bar is pitted and corroded but some of the decoration can still be seen in the form of three sets of incised circumferential rings alternating with raised bands on each side of the head. There are two incised lines, either side of a moulded zig-zag line, running centrally down the length of the bow from the top of …

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper-alloy Roman T-shaped hinged brooch, with the iron spindle held inside the tubular wings, visible from a break in the underside of one of the wings. The hinge is no longer in the notch behind the head of the brooch, which extends to a rectangular recess behind the bow, but this hollow back is filled with iron oxide suggesting that the missing pin was also made of iron. The wings have bulbous terminals defined by a moulded circumferential groove which is more visible on one side. The bow is triangular in plan, slightly expanded towards the wings, and narrowing down towards t…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of cast copper alloy Cornish Type 31 aesica-variant brooch dating from the Roman period. Only the curved base of the cruciform bow and the fantail foot of the brooch remain, with part of the catchplate on the back of it, but the cross bar and the rest of the cruciform bossed bow does not survive. The foot is decorated with two opposing recessed scalene triangles, which would have originally been inlaid with enamel, above three recessed roundels which still have some of the green enamel intact within them. One corner of the foot is missing which would have had another recessed…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post Medieval copper alloy buckle dating to c. 1690-1720. The buckle is sub-rectangular in shape with an angled frame with rounded corners outside edge. The outside edges are slightly lobed. The strap bar and pin are missing. At the top of the outside edge where the bar would have been attached there are remains of an iron pin or bar. Parallel to this on the bottom bar a circular pierced hole is present with some iron residue. This could suggest that this may be a shoe buckle which would have had a loop chape with a single integral spike attached, and a drilled central b…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire

An incomplete post Medieval copper alloy double loop asymmetrical buckle with missing pin, dating to c.1575-1700 AD. The buckle is sub-rectangular in shape. One loop is oval and the other rectangular. The outside edge and bar are square in cross-section. There are six lobed knops on the outside edge of the rectangular loop, and lobed knops at two symmetrical points on the outer edge of the rounded loop. There is a lobed protrusion either end of the strap bar. The buckle is almost black in colour which could suggest that the buckle is tinned. The back of the buckle is flat and undecora…

A complete cast lead-alloy ampulla dating to the Medieval period, c. 1350-1500. This example is of Spencer's type 2 and survives completely intact; it is bag-shaped in plan, with a flaring mouth, tapering neck (with a single co-incident side suspension lug on each side of the object) and rounded lower body. Preserved in good condition with an even greyish patina, it measures 51.24…
