Object type: SPUD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The remains of a small socketed iron tool, possibly a Roman spud. The tool has an unevenly worn crescentic blade which narrows in to the remains of a circular socket. It appears that the small section of the socket retained may be open, a trait often seen on iron objects and weapons of Iron age through to early-medieval date. This tool is similar to Roman 'spuds' - a tool used for cleaning other blades (like plough blades), or for barking (stripping bark which could be used in the tanning process) or even as a type of hoe. Manning (1985 plate 19) illustrates similar objects.

Quite often tokens with dates on have been poorly designed, with numbers and letters appearing the wrong way round. However this is a good quality token and remains in good condition. Leaden tokens or tallies are little understood artefacts; they may have been payment tokens (like 19t…

The sides of the blade are concave in plan, and this curvature stops at the junction of the blade and flange side. In profile the blade is sub-triangular with the widest section being before the stop ridge. The stop ridge has a small hole bef…

A complete but broken lead alloy finger ring of late medieval / early post-medieval date. The hoop and bezel have been made as two separate pieces and then soldered together. The slightly damaged bezel takes the form of a disc, the central area of which is occupied by a design, in negative relief, of a male's head facing right. An impression made of the bezel design is unclear but the figure appears to have large cheeks and a diademed head, possibly intending to have been a religious figure like St John the Baptist, or possibly the head of Christ. However the detail is too worn to…
