A complete glass bead of uncertain date. The bead is circular in plan with a slightly off-central circular perforation. The glass is a semi-translucent dark blue colour. The bead is 12.9mm in diameter, 5.9mm thick and weighs 1.2g. The perforation is 5.7mm in diameter. Glass beads are very difficult to date with any certainty. They are often thought to be Roman in date though blue glass beads were commonly for use in spangles on lace making bobbins in the 19th century. Due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Yorkshire

A perforated lead weight of unknown date. It is cylindrical and stands upright, though slightly angled. There is a small circular hole running longitudinally but off-centre through the weight, with a diameter of 2.4mm. The weight is slightly wider at one end than the other. It has rounded corners and a hollow in the base cuased by the lead shrinking as it cooled. It is 18.1mm tall, 15.4mm diameter and 23.87g. The simple nature of the weight and the narrow, off-centred hole suggests that it is probably a line weight, perhaps used for fishing or weighing down nets or snares, probably…

A lead weight, or plumb bob, of unknown date, AD 43 - 1800. The object is ovoid (egg-shaped) and is perforated with a very small hole running from end to end. The hole is 0.6mm diameter, and could only accomodate thin thread or wire. The weight has a smooth, well developed patina with some post-depositional scratches. It is 24.4mm long, 18.6mm diameter and 43.6g. The mass does not appear to correspond closely with any regular system of weighing, perhaps suggesting that the object is a plumb bob or net weight. It does not stand without support.
