Object type: TAP KEY
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy barrel tap key. A key made of two parts; a ball-ended handle with a cylindrical mid-part, and a cylindrical socket with rectangular aperture, diminishing in its diameter towards its union with the handle, into which its rectangular end passed to fit snuggly with its end flush with the top of the handle. The finder kindly suggests a function as a stop tap, though the construction in two parts may point to a slightly earlier date than this may imply. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850. Length: 52.2mm, Width: 51.8mm, Diameter (maximum): 17.1mm, Weight: 88.10gms

Copper alloy button. Flat discoid button with a cast and drilled loop brazed to its back. The front bears an incised motif comprising a central ring billeted with angled or spiral strokes, and with a triple incised petalled design around it, now worn. The surface decoration may have been added with the aid of a hand-operated machine, and the sides of the loop were finished with a file. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Diameter: 17.8mm, Thickness (clear of loop): 1.0mm, Weight: 2.40gms

Copper alloy button. Plain flat discoid button with a conical boss on the back retaining a drawn wire loop. A bubbled appearance on the front may suggest the decay of white metal plating. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Copper alloy weight. Cast biconvex weight with a flat moulded medial circumferential belt between its upper and lower parts, with a waisted basal knop and a probably drawn wire loop at the top. The latter retains two figure-of-eight links, each of length c.13mm. This may be a clock weight lost from a pendulum mechanism. Similar weights were also used as a plumb bob by surveyors using a theodolite, so an alternative interpretation might be suggested. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1800. Copper alloy probable furniture fitting. Cast hollow finial, possibly from a bedstead or fender, of oval form with a central circumferential U-profile hollow between its rounded halves and with a short [7.8mm] cylindrical socket at its base. Four incised rings on the upper and lower 'hemispheres' were probably executed during finishing on a lathe. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1850. Lead weight. One half of a cast discoid flat-sided weight with a lightly bevelled edge apparently arising from five cuts conferring a facetted appearance. Patinated, with very fine straight scratches in various directions on its upper side and with wider but probably adventitious marks on the lower. The mass may suggest this to now represent one ora/ore, a Viking Age equivalent of an underweight ounce, comprising six [here slightly underweight] sub units of 4.07gms. These units were used for transactions in silver bullion, which displaced the use of coinage in Danelaw areas c.850-950.…

Copper alloy bracelet fragment. One half of a bracelet made in two parts with paired lugs with holes of diameter 3mm at one end as one half of a hinged fastening, and a short pointed lug at the other end, perhaps a more battered relict of the same device. Excluding the linking terminal elements, there are nine bulbous or drum-shaped segments separated by plain collars. Each segment bears a moulded chevron around the external three quarters of its circumference, with the inner side smooth to lie against the skin of the wearer. The moulded decoration resembles 'chip carved' work, though…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a larger and a smaller flat face, a gently curved rim around the former, and with a moulded central aperture of diameter 7.6mm, Walton Rogers form A2. Patinated. Deep nicks and odd casting flaws give the misleading impression of decoration; patinated overall. The spindle size would admit a Middle Saxon date while the mass may indicate a primary function spinning a yarn. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 700-850. Object type: METAL WORKING DEBRIS
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy metalworking debris. A large fragment of solidified melt which has set on a smooth flat surface. The upper surface of the metal displays low rounded excrescences, and appears smoothed by adventitious wear. This was reported along with other fragments whose upper surfaces exhibited localised crystalline structures and whose lower surfaces were sanded. The different surfaces could point to two discrete episodes of non-ferrous metalworking in the same vicinity. The amount of metal in this fragment suggests the waste from a major episode of casting, and this reporter feels it…

Copper alloy metalworking debris. A fragment of solifdified casting spillage which has set on a flat and probably sanded surface. A part of the material has a pale purple grey tint, the rest is green. Part of an extensive spread of similar objects which point to a discrete episode of metalworking in the vicinity; the clear evidence for sanded surfaces here may suggest a deliberately formed casting bed was in use.
