Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy composite strap end dating to the Medieval period, c. 1350-1400. Only the lower portion of the internal spacer survives intact, with the side-plates and its upper section apparently missing in old damage. Originally it would have taken the form of an open circle, with a forked projection extending from its upper edge and an acorn-shaped terminal (demonstrating cross-hatched decoration on its cupule) protruding from its base, the latter separated from the main body of the object by means of a prominent transverse ridge. However, due to old breaks the spa…

An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic strap end dating to the early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) period. The object is tongue-shaped in plan and rectangular and slightly convex in section. At the upper end the plate bifurcates. Each plate possesses two circular perforations. One is filled with a small circular-section copper-alloy rivet. The lower end of the object tapers to form a rounded terminal in the form of a moulded animal head. The upper surface of the object is decorated with an incised sub-rectangular field enclosing a stylised zoomorphic motif. Above this is a zone containin…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete possible strap end of Post Medieval period (AD1500-1700). The object is roughly rectangular in shape with a wider damaged end. The narrower end is rounded and, at the wider end, the damaged edge has been folded over on one side. The other side has a deep cut into the side and has been slightly folded back. Halfway down the object is a folded hook; a similar hook would have been on the other side. These would have been used as part of the attachment to a leather strap. On the other side near the wider end there seems to be a casting error with the metal having run slig…
