Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman incomplete cast copper alloy developed T-shaped brooch dating to the late first to early second century AD. The pin, lower bow, foot and part of the head loop are missing. The head has two hollow cylindrical wings, now 26.8mm wide but probably damaged at the ends, to hold the axis bar for the hinged pin. Both taper in width to the damaged ends which are too corroded to see any decoration. Between the wings is a slot in which the pin would have hinged. Patches of iron corrosion in this slot and on the back of the brooch suggest an iron pin. There is an incomplete head loop for…

Lead musket ball. Cast ball with a deep cut and a shorter cut across it, and lighter cuts; patinated. The mass, at well over an ounce, indicates this to be for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification. Objects identified by this reporter as musket balls are those shot weighing in excess of one averdepois ounce, an arbitrary distinction from lighter shot and one encouraged by the circumstances of deposition of a large number [over 730] of such objects recorded in northern Lincolnshire. In this case, the ball approaches one twelth of a 16 ounce pound, a mas…
