A chubby childlike forearm is modelled at a scale of c.1:5 with an open hand with short fingers at one end, and an aperture of diameter 7.3mm at the other, just short of the position of the elbow. The body and dress of the doll would have been of fabric to which separate limbs and head were attached. Commenting on another example, Helen Geake notes that these dolls, known as 'Frozen Charlottes', were popular between 1840 and 1920. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1…

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Stone possible whetstone. A small dense compact dark grey pebble of triangular section with rounded ends and sharply defined arises between its flat faces, probably initially formed by wind erosion in a dusty or icy environment. One side, however, is lightly hollowed, probably by wear arising from use as a sharpening stone, and handling may have contributed to the smooth finish of other surfaces. The use of improvised whetstones, often recovered from Glacial Drift, was characteristic of a long period from Prehistory, through the Roman period, and up to the Viking Age introduction of s…

Grey flint microlith. A small narrow flake with long narrow parallel bladelets struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect defines a hollow in one long edge, while the opposite edge may bear very fine serrations, more easily felt than observed. Creamy patina on struck surfaces suggests the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Pale grey flint with cortex spots, debitage. Eight small chips of struck flint: five with a bulb on the ventral surface of which at least three also bear scars from the removal of small flakes from their dorsal sides. The remaining three chips also bear flake removal scars; in all cases from hard hammer strike. Patches of misty patina suggest they were subsequently exposed to a calcareous environment. County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex spots; scraper. A flake of wavy profile with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike, and with a prominent bulb on the ventral surface. Patches of dense creamy patina have developed over the struck surfaces, indicating a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This has been trimmed along one side of the flake by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. The Neolithic period could accommodate both episodes. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Burnt flint. Two small fragments of flint bearing a thick creamy patina suggesting its prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, and both crazed overall by heating. The smaller chip may have had flakes struck from its dorsal side; the larger does not appear to have been deliberately worked, though it may have incurred adventitious impacts.
