Fragment from the side of a Roman probably East Gaulish industry Samian flanged bowl of form 38 (or possibly 44), dating to AD 150-250 (Webster 1996:51). The fabric is medium hard fired, bright orange-red, non-micaceous, with abundent very small white inclusions visible with a lense and occasional rounded patinated larger inclusions, possibly chert. The surface slip is mostly lost but where it remains it appears to be a dark red with any satin finish lost. The remaining section is a section of the convex curved side wall with the abraded flange on the outer side. The outer edge of the flange is abraded so it is not clear how large it was originally or if it had a bent end but it appears to angle quite stongly downwards and now extends to 10.8mm from the wall. The sherd has very worn breaks to all sides and weighs 21.63g.

A complete cast copper alloy miniature object of Roman date and in excellent condition. The object takes the form two co-joined cornucopiae, the upper terminals moulded with grapes and acorns spilling out over the edges of the measures. The object is crescentic in profile with no sign of any mount or fixing, which suggests this is an object in its own right and may have had votive / religious significance. Findind parallels for stand-alone double cornucopiae has been difficult although I am grateful to Martin Henig (University of Oxford) for pointing out a statue in the British Museum collection ( 1824,0424.1 ) that depicts a similar object.
This object was kindly donated to the Oxfordshire County Museum Service by the finder.

Incomplete medieval copper alloy key dating to the period c. c. AD 1300 - 1450. The bow is in the form of an openwork quatrefoil with a moulded circumferential collar at the junction between bow and shank. The shank is cylindrical and hollow, the interior now filled with earth and corrosion product. The channel expands into an incomplete bit, the surviving section comprising four wards arranged in two opposing pairs. It terminates in an old break.
Ward Perkins (1940) considered a hollow shank to be indicative of a casket or chest key (Egan 1998, p.111).

A flint core of probable Bronze Age date, c. AD 1600-800. A sub-conical fragment of chert-like grey flint mottled with regular inclusions, and with a small area of thin, compact, beige-pink cortex below the striking platform. The core has two largely unworked facets, with a series of irregularly sized sub-parallel removals from the the third. A promonotory projects from between each removal, suggesting a lack of platform preparation.
Dimensions: length 40.8mm; width 42.6mm; thickness 38.9mm; weight 40.33g.
Although sub-parallel removals may suggest an earlier date, their irregular size and lack of platform preparation would suggest that the core fits with the date range of the majority of the material found in the vicinity, which is more characteriscally later Prehistoric.
