A sub-oval shaped pierced lead object of unknown date, which was probably used as a weight. This artefact weighs 19.59g (0.69oz). The external oval dimensions are 31.7mm x 25.9mm. Both sides are uneven but slightly convex giving the artefact a maximum thickness of 5.0mm. An irregular shaped sub-oval aperture is present at the approximate centre of the object. This measures 8.3mm x 5.4mm. The lead around the edge of this aperture is recessed creating a narrow ledge of c.1.6mm width. If this object was not used to weigh other items and instead was held in place, to something else, with …

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with a central probably drilled aperture of diameter 3.5mm. The object was cast in an open mould, as is suggested by shrinkage lines on its base. Lightly patinated. The hole might indicate provision for suspension as a steelyard weight, a category of object to which a Roman date is conventionally applied. These usually bear traces of a ferrous metal loop, here absent. The mass does not immediately suggest close correspondence with any system of Roman or later date were use as a standing weight envisaged. The good surface condition might also point to a…
