Object type: DISCOIDAL KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic (4000 - 2500 BC) discoidal knife: The knife sub-oval and is knapped from a mottled dark brown flint which is opaque where it is more slender in thickness. It has been bi-facially worked with invasive, scaled, low-angled flake removals. Over half of both the dorsal and ventral surfaces have been polished, particularly one lateral edge and the distal edge. The edges are rounded with the polishing. Knapping has removed the bulb of percussion. It measures 100.30mm long, 72.55mm wide, 13.93mm thick and weighs 115.64g. Discoidal knives in Worcestershire are very rare, this i…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lithic point dating from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age. Its possible age covers a potentially vast span of time, from c. 100,000 years ago to c. 800 BC. The point is made on a triangular shaped flake, with evidence of invasive knapping on both faces and along the edges. There is a prominent bulb of percussion on the ventral face, which is suggestive of hard hammer knapping technique. The dorsal face features invasive large flake removals across the surface of the flake, with small 'retouch' along the right edge, and blunted retouch along the left edge. The flint is dark …

Object type: PLANO CONVEX KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Plano-convex knife, of sub-rectangular plan form, finely, and invasively pressure flaked from a secondary, hard hammer struck blade-like flake of good quality mottled grey flint, now patinated slightly by iron oxides, most noticeably to one lateral edge near the middle. The opposing edge has the distal end of a previously struck, hinge terminated flake that was present in the dorsal surface before the blade-like flake was struck, and this has been modified into a small notch by steep, non-invasive retouch to the ventral face. The bulb of percussion has been removed to form a chisel-li…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint lithic implement probably dating from the late Neolithic period, about 3300 BC - 2200 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of translucent dark grey flint, with some patination starting to form on the distal end. It is subtriangular in plan, with a wide straight distal end, narrower rounded proximal end and S shaped sides, concave at the proximal end and convex at the wider distal end. The flake is very thin and there is a double arris on the dorsal face. It is curved down at the distal end. The dorsal face is covered with previous removal scars and there is platform prepera…

Object type: DAGGER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A flint dagger dating from the Beaker Period of the early Bronze Age, about 2500 BC - 1500 BC, but most likely dating from 2400 BC - 2200 BC. It is an ogival, leaf-shaped blade with four notches in each of the straight sides of the butt. It is formed on light grey, semi-translucent flint. The blade has convex sides meeting at a point. The butt has straight sides and a rounded narrow butt. The notches for hafting are in opposed pairs. The dagger is a shallow pointed oval in cross-section. Both faces are covered with scaled low-angle retouch, with parallel, long, low-angle removals round…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two retouched flint blades of Mesolithic date, about 10000 BC - 4000 BC. 1. A snapped blade fragment formed on a tertiary blade of partially patinated flint. It is trapezoid in plan - rectangular but with an oblique distal end - and trapezoid in cross-section with a double arris on the dorsal face. Both ends of the blade appear to be snapped. There is also some short, sup-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch in the centre of the right (longer) side. This piece may be waste material from the production of microliths or even an abandoned microlith blank. It is 12.5mm long, 9.1mm wide, 2.4mm…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of Mesolithic to Bronze Age date, about 10000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of grey flint and is patinated, with some damage removing the patination in places. It is oval in plan and curved (crescent shaped) in cross section. The flake is quite rough, or damaged, but has short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch on the right side and distal end . The proximal end is concave, and is probably the hinged termination of a larger previous flake. The left side is damaged and more thinly patinated. The scraper is 21.2mm long, 17.7mm wide and 8.8mm thick. 3.07g.
