Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probably post medieval cast copper-alloy bi-face trade token. Obverse : the initial letters I B Reverse : a poorly molded depiction of an anchor. Discussion: Most tokens of this form come in lead, this example clearly shows affinities with such tokens so the powell classification is used here. Such tokens had a wide variety of potential uses such as tallies, gaming pieces, tickets, weights, etc. and are believed to have been locally produced; they are therefore difficult to date precisely. Those carrying initials are generally deemed to be post-Medieval in date (1500-1850). Th…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Nottinghamshire

A lead alloy spindle whorl (probably) dating from the Roman or Early Medieval period probably, about AD 43 - 1000. It is of Walton Rogers Form A1, having a D shaped cross section, and being plano-convex, however, it is oval rather than circular and of uneven thickness, casting doubt on its function as a spindle whorl. The central aperture is 3-4mm diameter. The small diameter of the central hole is thought to indicate an early date. The whorl is 18mm long, 15mm wide and 7.8mm thick. 8.07g. If not a whorl, it could be a perforated weight.
