Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy brooch. Cast oval frame of thickness 1.2mm with a series of juxtaposed lugs set in pairs and projecting from a plain border. The lugs bear pelleted detail, and at least some represent flowers. On the back, each pair - there were possibly five in a cinquefoil arrangement - has a low central rib to reinforce it, and a pair of strips of ribbons of width 2.4mm and 2.7mm may have related to fastening of the object. The centre of the brooch is empty. This might have held a stone, or may have been viewed against a coloured backing. This appears typical of cheap jewellery of the 13…

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with a central probably drilled aperture of diameter 3.5mm. The object was cast in an open mould, as is suggested by shrinkage lines on its base. Lightly patinated. The hole might indicate provision for suspension as a steelyard weight, a category of object to which a Roman date is conventionally applied. These usually bear traces of a ferrous metal loop, here absent. The mass does not immediately suggest close correspondence with any system of Roman or later date were use as a standing weight envisaged. The good surface condition might also point to a…
