A sub-oval shaped pierced lead object of unknown date, which was probably used as a weight. This artefact weighs 19.59g (0.69oz). The external oval dimensions are 31.7mm x 25.9mm. Both sides are uneven but slightly convex giving the artefact a maximum thickness of 5.0mm. An irregular shaped sub-oval aperture is present at the approximate centre of the object. This measures 8.3mm x 5.4mm. The lead around the edge of this aperture is recessed creating a narrow ledge of c.1.6mm width. If this object was not used to weigh other items and instead was held in place, to something else, with …

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with a central probably drilled aperture of diameter 3.5mm. The object was cast in an open mould, as is suggested by shrinkage lines on its base. Lightly patinated. The hole might indicate provision for suspension as a steelyard weight, a category of object to which a Roman date is conventionally applied. These usually bear traces of a ferrous metal loop, here absent. The mass does not immediately suggest close correspondence with any system of Roman or later date were use as a standing weight envisaged. The good surface condition might also point to a…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of Mesolithic to Bronze Age date, about 10000 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a tertiary flake of grey flint and is patinated, with some damage removing the patination in places. It is oval in plan and curved (crescent shaped) in cross section. The flake is quite rough, or damaged, but has short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch on the right side and distal end . The proximal end is concave, and is probably the hinged termination of a larger previous flake. The left side is damaged and more thinly patinated. The scraper is 21.2mm long, 17.7mm wide and 8.8mm thick. 3.07g.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead alloy spindle whorl (probably) dating from the Roman or Early Medieval period probably, about AD 43 - 1000. It is of Walton Rogers Form A1, having a D shaped cross section, and being plano-convex, however, it is oval rather than circular and of uneven thickness, casting doubt on its function as a spindle whorl. The central aperture is 3-4mm diameter. The small diameter of the central hole is thought to indicate an early date. The whorl is 18mm long, 15mm wide and 7.8mm thick. 8.07g. If not a whorl, it could be a perforated weight.
