A gilded copper alloy, pear shaped face mask mount dating to the period c. AD 600 - 700. The object is flat and in the form of a horned head. The circular face has rounded eyes set with red stones (either garnets or coloured glass), above pronounced cheeks. The beard is triangular with the ends of the moustache extending beyond. The hair appears uncovered but then develops into two decorated crescent extensions (the horns), meeting centrally above the face with what might be an eagle, and/or serpent heads. With verdigris eruptions on the surface, the gilding is fragmentary but clea…

A medieval (1350-1500) copper-alloy sexfoil belt mount. It is similar to Egan's Dress Accessories (1991; 187, no 952). The mount is domed and sexfoil in shape, with concave, circular dishes on each lobe, and is broadly floral in design. These lobes surround a central rivet hole, 1.57mm, which has a raised concentric ridge around it. Presumably this would have been for a (now missing) rivet. The udnerside is hollow, and has no attachments. In total, this mount measures 12.83mm in diameter and weighs 0.46g. The patina is smooth, and dark green in colour, except for the concave dishes w…

A copper-alloy mount in the shape of an acorn of the Post Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1600 - c. AD 1700. The object is broadly oval in plan and a shallow D shape in profile. The front is slightly convex and the back concave. There are two integral circular sectioned rivet spikes on the back, one near either end, both slightly off centre and bent towards the plate. Most of the spikes are lost to patinated breaks but enough remains of one to see it was bent downwards 90 degrees. The acorn has an elongated oval shape with a thinner 'nut', a raised plain collar across the midd…

An incomplete copper alloy decorative mount or fitting of early Medieval date, c. 12th century AD (AD 1100-1200). The object is formed from a sem-circular plate of copper alloy, gilded on the upper surface. The plate has alternating rounded panels of openwork and solid panels decorated with human face-masks. Between the panels are several smaller holes presumably for rivets, two of which survive. These rivets stand proud of the front surface and have been gilded, suggesting that they are decorative rather than functional. Each rivet is cone shaped and terminates with a rounded knop.…
