Medieval, about AD 1400 - 1800. Description: The weight is a shallow dome with a convex upper side and a roughly flat base. The upper domed surface is in the form of a male lion with clearly defined muzzle, nose eyes and a main picked out with downward diagonal lines. It is patinated an off white typical of aged lead. A fragment of a medieval cast copper alloy vessel leg, dating to 1400-1450. The leg of the vessel is in the shape of a foot or paw, with a worn break where it would have attached to the vessel, followed by a raised collar. The leg then decends with three raised ridges, the basal end is paw-shaped with three worn toes. The leg is D shaped in cross section. The reverse or inside of the leg is flat. Pottery. A coarse fabric, externally oxidised and internally reduced, with abundant calcareous and flint inclusions to length 3mm, probably a hand made vessel. This sherd was kindly examined by Sandra Firth of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. The inclusions may have been intended to improve the resistance of a vessel to the thermal shock of heating and cooling. Fiercely abraded. Suggested date: Late Iron Age, 100BC - AD 43. Description: The vessel survives only as a body sherd with some rim at the top lip. The sherd has mixed variably spaced inclusions of small grit and quartz. and sparse specks of mica dusting. The sherd is unoxidised being ad dark grey throughout. The sherd likely relates to a cooking pot. Measurements: 34.05mm wide. 35.18mm high, 9.03mm thick and 12.20g in weight.
