A cast circular gilt copper-alloy mount or escutcheon possibly from a hanging bowl or harness fitting (or, just possibly, a shield-boss apex mount) of fifth to seventh-century date.
Description: The mount is disc shape and quite flat. The decoration is cast in relief and has a raided outer rim. The underside shows some blobs or scars of corrosion product possibly corresponding to a solder by which it was attached to the vessel. Copper alloy and iron brooch. Cast small long brooch of cross potent form retaining the corroded remnant of an iron pin at a lug behind its head. The three arms of a cruciform head are all indented with a curved hollow in their sides. A curved concavo-convex bow with central aris and a flat triangular zone at the top of its projection is lightly hollowed behind. A fragment of an Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy cruciform brooch dating to the sixth century AD. The fragment comprises the head plate, bow and foot plate. The foot is missing. The head comprises a rectangular plate with hemispherical-section moulded knobs projecting on three sides and the bow projecting from the lower side. The plate is undecorated but has a raised central panel from which the bow extends. On the underside, there are the remains of the pierced hinge lug. An incomplete silver ingot of possible Early Medieval dating (AD 850 to AD 1000).
The silver ingot is sub rectangular with a square cross section. The corners are slightly bevelled and there are some hammer marks along the edge. The ends are incomplete.
It measures 28.3 mm in length, 8.8 mm wide and 6.2 mm thick. It weighs 8.9 g.
The ingot is a dark grey colour, with an even surface patina.
The shape and size of the ingot is suggestive that it might be Early Medieval in dating, like SF-68844D 2016T988 and SUSS-7A58A3 2016T269. Comments on the record for SF-68844D state that: it is …
