Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete Roman copper-alloy hinged developed T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. AD 75-150. The lower half of the bow has been lost, along with the catch-plate, as has the pin. The upper half of the bow has been bent to one side as a result of old damage. At the head of the brooch the wings survive largely complete to a width of 20.2 mm, though there is some damage visible to the lefhand wing at its tip. The wings are slightly irregular, sub-cylindrical, with the left wing c. 2.9 mm in diameter and the right wing 3.1 mm. A c. 1.5 mm slot to accommodate a hinged pin, now los…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A medieval copper-alloy rotary key dating c. 1200-1400. From the size of the key and the presence of a hollow stem it is likely that the key would have been used to lock a casket. The bow is slightly irregular and sub circular in shape. Its sides are flattened to varying extents giving a mainly oval cross-section. It is 10.5 mm long (i.e. from the join with the stem to the opposite side) and 11.3 mm wide. A transverse moulding or collar can be seen at the junction between stem and bow. The stem consists of a hollow rod, rectangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. It is 1…

An early medieval silver pyramidal mount, probably from a sword scabbard dating from the 7th century. The mount is hollow with four triangular faces and a flat top. Each face is decorated with a single-line raised border and a central tripod-like motif resembling a reversed 'x' (sedge) rune, some clearer and better preserved than others. On two opposing panels, two short lines extend from each side of the central line, flanking the forked end. On one of these panels, there are also two extra lines extending from the apex and flanking the central line. The incised lines contain …

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A copper alloy wire ring possibly dating to the Roman period. The object consists of two strips of wire which are bent into a circle to form the band. The ends overlap and curl around the band forming two slip knots. The strips of wire are circular in cross-section. Dimensions: 19mm in diameter, 11mm in width at the bezel, 1.50g. This basic style of slip-knotted wire ring had a long life (there are Roman examples) but was perhaps most popular in the 7th century AD, when it was most commonly used on necklaces. Similar finger rings are known from Viking graves and hoards of the la…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A large fragment of a broken post-medieval copper-alloy strap-fitting, probably a sword belt hanger/mount dating to c. 1500-1650. The strap-fitting would probably have had three suspension loops from which a trio of hooked plates would have hung, and with a trefoliate terminal (knop) at either end. The other terminal and two of the loops and all hooked plates are missing. The fragment consists of the one end of the mount, just under half of the complete object, including one surviving attachment loop (that which would originally have been at the mount's centre). The mount terminate…

A medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount in the form of a central circular element flanked by two small sub-rectangular, squared off ends. The centre is domed with a concave reverse and convex front, while the terminal elements are thinner and D-shaped or trapezoidal in cross-section. The ends each have a pierced hole though the centre, one clear, the other containing either corrosion product, solder or the remains of a rivet, giving the reverse a recessed effect; at the front this material is flush with the mount and its slighly paler and browner shade suggests a different alloy. The f…
