An incomplete Roman copper-alloy hinged developed T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. AD 75-150. The lower half of the bow has been lost, along with the catch-plate, as has the pin. The upper half of the bow has been bent to one side as a result of old damage. At the head of the brooch the wings survive largely complete to a width of 20.2 mm, though there is some damage visible to the lefhand wing at its tip. The wings are slightly irregular, sub-cylindrical, with the left wing c. 2.9 mm in diameter and the right wing 3.1 mm. A c. 1.5 mm slot to accommodate a hinged pin, now los…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy hinged applied hook brooch of Mackreth's type 1.a., probably dating to c. AD 25-100. The brooch now comprises of the head (with both wings probably incomplete) and bow, the pin both lost. At the head of the brooch the wings survive to a width of 38.0mm, these are C-shaped in cross section, and both terminate in patinated breaks. Two incised parallel longitudinal lines survive on the right wing, with a third on the left. Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A medieval copper-alloy rotary key dating c. 1200-1400. From the size of the key and the presence of a hollow stem it is likely that the key would have been used to lock a casket. The bow is slightly irregular and sub circular in shape. Its sides are flattened to varying extents giving a mainly oval cross-section. It is 10.5 mm long (i.e. from the join with the stem to the opposite side) and 11.3 mm wide. A transverse moulding or collar can be seen at the junction between stem and bow. The stem consists of a hollow rod, rectangular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross-section. It is 1…

An incomplete Roman copper alloy hinged applied hook brooch of Mackreth's type 1.c., probably dating to c. AD 25-100. The brooch now comprises of the head (with left wing incomplete) and bow, with the foot and pin both lost to patinated breaks. At the head of the brooch the wings survive to a width of 37.0mm, these are cylindrical, c. 6.9mm in diameter, with a rectangualr slot cut into the reverse to accomodate a hinged pin, now lost. Each wing is decorated with parallel bands of engraved, corded decoration, although abrasion leaves areas indistinct. The bow projects from the head …

A fragment of a Roman copper alloy hinged crossbow brooch, probably dating to c. AD 350-410. The fragment consists of the head only, the bow being lost to a patinated break. The wings of the brooch survive to a width of 43.5mm, these are circular in cross section and terminate in a pair of collared, integral onion-shaped knops, c. 13.8mm in diameter. The wings themselves measure 8.6mm in diameter. Hidden behind the pointed tips of the knops are small perforations containing iron corrosion, indicating the presence of an iron axis bar. A rectangualr slot has been cut into the reverse…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset

A large fragment of a broken post-medieval copper-alloy strap-fitting, probably a sword belt hanger/mount dating to c. 1500-1650. The strap-fitting would probably have had three suspension loops from which a trio of hooked plates would have hung, and with a trefoliate terminal (knop) at either end. The other terminal and two of the loops and all hooked plates are missing. The fragment consists of the one end of the mount, just under half of the complete object, including one surviving attachment loop (that which would originally have been at the mount's centre). The mount terminate…

A medieval cast copper-alloy bar mount in the form of a central circular element flanked by two small sub-rectangular, squared off ends. The centre is domed with a concave reverse and convex front, while the terminal elements are thinner and D-shaped or trapezoidal in cross-section. The ends each have a pierced hole though the centre, one clear, the other containing either corrosion product, solder or the remains of a rivet, giving the reverse a recessed effect; at the front this material is flush with the mount and its slighly paler and browner shade suggests a different alloy. The f…
