Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Blue-grey flint possible scraper. A thick flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer, and with a prominent bulb on its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge. Misty patina has developed over the struck surfaces, suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This is disrupted along part of the edge, possibly by battering or reuse of a discarded tool. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a tortoise scraper. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC.

Brown flint with cortex strip, possibly collected from the East Coast; scraper. A long flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trimmed cortex along one long edge, and contributed to the formation of a notch in the opposite long edge. The edges are battered by use. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Flint scraper. A thick oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer working, and with a bulb on the ventral side trimmed by further angled scalar retouch using a hard hammer. The curving edge is battered, presumably from use. A dense creamy patina indicates the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Grey-brown flint with cortex, possible scraper. A small thick flake with a little cortex trimmed by angled scalar retouch, and a limited zone of short abrupt retouch along one side. A bulb and ripples appear on the ventral surface. Some if not all of the apparent retouch could have arisen from edge-on impacts. Suggested date: possibly Bronze Age, 2350-800 BC.

Grey flint scraper. A roughly L-shaped flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly hollowed ventral surface, both characteristic features of flint work of the later Mesolithic period. Misty white patina has developed over struck faces, suggesting the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina is interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, with limited subsequent adventitious chipping, probably to form a notched scraper. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Grey flint scraper. A thin flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side ands with a slightly concave ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge and the two ends. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Dark grey flint with cortex scraper. A thick flake with long narrow parallel flakes trimmed from its dorsal side by invasive angled retouch and with a bulb at one end of a markedly concave ventral surface. Either use of the side or adventitious chipping has interrupted a patchy misty patina over struck areas, which suggests the object has endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.
