Treasure case 2017 T1184: Disclaimed returned to finder Description: A medieval silver penny which has been modified to form an item of jewellery. The coin was pierced twice, at 11 and 1'oclock on the obverse, (5 and 7 o'clock on the reverse) with sub-circular piercings, one drilled from each side. One hole has cracked through to the edge. The other hole is worn into an oval shape. There are also traces of gilding around some of the letters on the reverse. An incomplete copper alloy Colchester derivative, hinged brooch dating to the Roman period (c. AD 55-100). The brooch is in two parts and both were recovered very close together in the same field. The head of the brooch has two short wings with a recess in the centre on the reverse to accommodate the, now missing, pin. The bow extends from the head of the brooch at a steep curve and after this the brooch has broken. The second piece of the brooch comprises the rest of the bow that tapers down to the foot. Fragment of a copper alloy spear head dating from the Middle Bronze Age, about 1550 - 1250 BC. It probably can be assigned to Davis's Group 6 'Developed side looped' type (Davis 2017). It has a narrow blade measuring 44mm in length and 18mm in width. The tip is missing and the break is very worn and patinated suggesting it broke in antiquity; the base of the fragment also shares the same patina. Most of the spear head is missing. An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester brooch. The brooch is made from the one piece of metal. The brooch has a bilateral spring with an external chord held by a forward facing hook. The spring is hidden behind two flat, rectangular wings. The bow is comma shaped in profile and oval in section. The catchplate is missing. The bow is worn, but appears to have vertical lines. Date circa AD 25-60.

An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic (bird) plate brooch dating to the Roman period (c. AD 50-200). The brooch is in the form of a raptor bird, possibly an eagle, in relief with the feathers indicated by incised line decoration and the eyes and beak cast. The underside of the brooch retains the remains of the integral hinge to hold the pin and the catchplate. Both extend outwards from the reverse of the brooch at a 90 degree angle. An incomplete cast copper alloy headstud brooch of Roman date. The wings are rectangular and ribbed, and cover a circular casing on the reverse that contains the pin bar. A fragment of the hinged pin survives. The bow is comma shaped in profile and has a moulded stud on the top. The stud is decorated with two concentric circles. The lower bow is incomplete but was decorated with two rows of triangular cells of red enamel. Brooches of this type date from the 1st-2nd century AD.

A complete copper alloy prick or 'rivet' spur dating to the Roman period (c.AD 200 - 410). The object comprises two D-sectioned arms that terminate at either end in a flattened disc, which is perforated with an iron rivet in each in order to attach the spur to its strap.
