Object type: PIN
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy early Iron Age ring-headed 'swan-neck' pin. Only the ring terminal survives. This is circular in cross-section - 5.00mm in diamater. There is a diagonal join at one side, below which a small damaged strip of metal projects from the outer edge - all that remains of the stem. This fragment is slightly narrower than the head and curves outwards at an angle, confirming that the complete stem would have been a 'swan-neck' rather than straight shape. The surface of the metal is pitted with corrosion, but where the original surface survives it has …

A copper-alloy Early Medieval (Anglo Saxon) Great Square-headed brooch fragment. The surviving part is the terminal of the foot-plate; it is tongue shaped with slightly concave lateral sides and straight old break on its upper edge. The back face is plain and bends slightly forwards near the break; traces of white metal soldering are visible on the bent surface. The front face has a prominent teardrop-shaped boss which tapers upward into a narrow ridge turning into a possible stylised human face. The outer edges of the fragment are raised and leave a lowered rim around the boss and th…

Grey flint debitage. A small flake with small broad flakes struck from its ?dorsal surface and with fainter narrow parallel flake removal scars on its ?ventral surface. The finder kindly suggests that the grey tint may identify this as a Wolds-type flint, perhaps incorporated in glacial Drift, and one which has endured only scant exposure to the presently discolouring local environment. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 17.4mm, Width: 24.6mm, Thickness: 4.2mm, Weight: 2.03gms

Grey-green flint possible scraper. A thick flake with broad flakes struck from its ?dorsal side and with a convex ?ventral surface. Further ripples on the putative dorsal side may suggest angled scalar retouch executed from the ?dorsal aspect, possibly along with heavy battering. One long edge is hackled. Grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast; debitage. A small flake with broad flakes struck from its ?dorsal side by hard hammer working. The ?ventral surface bears narrow parallel flake removal scars within a hollowed area. A strip of cortex whose thin fine character may suggest the coastal origin of the flint appears along one edge. An incomplete lead-alloy figurine of probable Post-Medieval date, c.AD 1600 - 1900. The figurine is in the form of a male, dressed in a tunic with arms straight down either side of the body. The legs and feet are together. The head is bent forward and to the left though no facial features are present. A perforation runs through the body, extending from the left hip (when viewed from the front) to the centre of the lower back. The stance of the figurine gives the appearance of a hanged man though this is not definite and the head may simply be lowered. The metal has a light white…
