County: Sefton
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-Medieval to Modern cast copper-alloy figurine (c. AD 1650-1850). This figurine is a human, probably male standing, facing forwards. There is no visible clothing or drapery and the facial features are worn. At the top of the head is a rounded projection, possibly representing a helmet or it may be an incomplete attachment. The figure's right arm is raised forwards and bends down just above the elbow at an unnatural angle before terminating with a break. The left arm is slightly bent at the elbow and rests down by his hip. The figure possibly holds a long thin…

An lead alloy object of uncertain function. The object is circular in plan and is D-shaped in cross-section. The flat face is rough and uneven with no visible pitting. Due to its undiagnostic nature it cannot be dated closely however the condition of the lead suggests a Post-Medieval date is likely. The object may have functioned as a palm guard however there are no diagnostic features. Palm guards were for use by a leather worker to protect the palm whilst stitching. Bailey (1995, 64-65) dates such objects to the 17th century onwards.

Object type: RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy ring probably dating to the medieval period. The object is circular in plan and hexagonal in cross-section. The ring varies in thickness where the object has worn, probably due to wearing against another connection. It has a mid-brown patina. Notes: Plain rings of such proportions have often been suggested to be Medieval or Post-Medieval harness rings (Geake 2001, 74), though they are typically un-diagnostic.

A complete Medieval to Post Medieval cast lead circular unifaced token (1250-1800 AD). The token has been cast with a raised design of a equal arm cross with a pellet in each quarter on the obverse and a flat, undecorated reverse. The token measures 22.25 mm in diameter, 3.09 mm thick and weighs 8.6 grams. Lead tokens had a wide variety of uses and were made locally; they are therefore hard to date precisely and could be Medieval or Post Medieval in date (1250-1800 AD). Until recently cross and pellet designs were thought to be contemporary with the similar Medieval coin designs; howe…
