Fragment of a lead-alloy object of uncertain identity, of post-medieval to modern date (c. 1700 - 1930 AD), probably a toy model. The fragment appears to have slotted onto something. It is sub-triangular in shape, tapering from a relatively straight if slightly chipped and dented edge to the jagged edge where it has broken off. The front face is ornately decorated in moulded relief. A raised band runs transversally across the wider end of the fragment, decorated with two parallel transverse ridges with vertical ridges running between the two. The inner boundary of this raised section …

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: York
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment from a copper-alloy double-looped trapezoidal buckle of post-medieval date (c. 1620 - 1680 AD), missing pin. Approximately half of the buckle frame has broken off, leaving two short spurs as the relict of the second loop. The missing loop would have been symmetrical with the remaining loop, which has a square-shaped inner edge and a pentagonal outer edge, resulting in a square-shaped frame with a triangular lip. The edges of the fragment are bevelled and the top and bottom surfaces are flat. At the broken end is a narrowed strap bar, square in section, with a flat, semi-circu…

Copper-alloy single-looped rectangular buckle of medieval or post-medieval date (c. 1300 - 1700 AD). The buckle is long and thin with a rectangular frame that has an offset bar with a copper-alloy sheet roller crudely folded around it at one end. The jagged edge of the sheet overhangs; perhaps this roller was a later addition fashioned in response to a break. The bar at the opposite end is also offset and is square in section, in contrast with the rectangular section of the upper and lower sides. The length of the buckle suggests that it had a specific function that is not known. Both…

Copper-alloy medieval D-shaped frame with offset strap bar, dating to the medieval period (c. 1250 - 1500 AD), missing its pin but with attached buckle-plate. The D-shaped buckle frame has a sloping upper face and flat under face, resulting in a sub-triangular section. The strap bar is narrowed and offset with a round section. A rectangular copper-alloy sheet is folded around the strap bar, with the function of a buckle plate. There is a central slot for a pin, which is missing. The buckle plate has swung into the central aperture of the buckle frame and corrosion has fastened it into…

Copper-alloy sub-rectangular single-looped buckle, complete with copper-alloy pin, dating to the medieval period (c. 1350 - 1500 AD). The buckle-frame widens from an offset strap bar to a thick lip. The strap bar is square in section, while the lip is bevelled on the outside edge, giving it a pentagonal section. There are two transverse grooves on the front face of the lip. A notch has worn on the outer edge of the bar strap from movement of the pin, which is still attached and comprises of a copper-alloy wire with one end bent around the strap bar. The pin is round in section and sli…

The buckle frame is rectangular, with a widened and slightly rounded lip. Opposite to this is a strap bar with a slight groove worn on the outer edge where the pin (now missing) rested. The remaining two edges of the frame curve outwards, with casting spurs evident on the outer edge at either end.
