A post-Medieval Irish copper-alloy 'gun money' shilling of James II (1685-1691 AD), dated 1690 on coin and minted in April at Dublin or Limerick. Spink no: 6582D Obverse: IACOBVS II DI GRATIA; laureate and draped bust left. Reverse: 1690 . MAG . BR . FRA . ET . HIB . REX; Crown with two sceptres crossed behind, in each quarter XII//I/R//MAY: (XII = denomination). These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James was attempting to recover the English throne and were supposed to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value.
