A complete Medieval to post-Medieval copper-alloy cup weight (c. 1485-c. 1547). This cup weight, part of a set, is circular in plan with straight sides that flare out from the base towards the plain rim. The base is convex and the floor of the cup is concave. At the centre of the floor there is a central circular pit which is probably related to lathe-work. Adjacent to the pit are two stamped motifs: a rose and a lower case 'h'. The letter 'h' may indicate that the weight was issued during the reign of Henry VII (1485-1509) or Henry VIII (1509-1547). The weight is dark brown wit…

Lead weight. A cast globular weight of a significant mass exceeding 500gms [the limit of weighing machines available to this reporter]. Patinated, with numerous straight cuts in its sides. The finder correctly notes the similarity of the object to those steelyard weights ascribed to the Roman period, though it lacks any evidence for means of suspension enabling it to function in that way - unless the cut-marks were deliberately inflicted to furnish tying notches. The object has a slightly flattened base which would at least enable its function as a standing weight. Suggested date: pos…

Lead weight. Cast discoid hem weight with a sunken central panel on one side with a pair of stitching holes of diameter 2.5mm in its base. The edge of the weight is lightly bevelled. The object bears a coating of brown paint or varnish. The mass suggests an intended weight of one half ounce. The object is in unusually good condition, which may suggest that its context has suffered scant disturbance since its deposition. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900. Diameter: 22.3mm, Thickness: 3.5mm, Weight: 14.43gms

A circular lead weight, probably of Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1500. It is circular with a flat base, rounded sides and a deeply concave upper face, the hollow within a plain border. There appears to be the remains of a pointed and square-topped shield moulded in the base of the hollow, but mainly obliterated by a series of short deep scratches and a circular piercing; these could be attemps to cancel the weight. The weight is 35.7mm in diameter and 9.7mm thick. It weighs 80.11gm, perhaps approaching the suggested mass of quarter of a Tower or Troy pound (Egan, 1998, page 302). Th…

A copper alloy quarter ounce pan weight of post-Medieval date, dating from the Georgian period or later, about AD 1714 - 1850 It is circular and lathe turned, with a raised rim on the upper face, and an inner circular groove. In the centre is stamped a mark, probably a crown, above the letter GR. This may stand for George Rex and indicate the monarch when the weight was made, or may indicate a the place of issue: See DUR-85ED28 which cites "Biggs (1993, English Weights, An Illustrated Survey, 54) where it states that the markings refer to the place of issue. The crowned GR mark is sai…

The object is 28.2 mm in diameter, 8.2 mm thick and weighs 24.1 g. The perforation is 12.7 mm in diameter. Lead spindle whorls and weights were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any…
