Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint Scraper of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (9000-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface is convex and has one central negative scar. All edges have short parallel flaking. All edges have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly concave and has ripples of percussion emanating from a small bulb of percussion situated at the proximal end. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake.
The flint is dark grey in colour.

A complete flint Scraper of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (9000-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface is convex and has two predominant negative scars. The right hand edge has short parallel flaking. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly concave and has ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake.
The flint is dark grey in colour with cream inclusions throughout.

A complete flint Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface is convex and is covered by retained cortex. The left hand edge has short parallel flaking. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is concave and has ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. The lithic retains a large amount of cortex and is therefore a primary flake.
The flint is dark grey in colour, the cortex is light brown.

A complete flint Thumbnail Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains covering scaled flaking. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly concave with ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake.
The flint is grey in colour with some dark grey inclusions.

A complete flint Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains one predominant negative scar and short parallel flaking to the distal and left and right hand edges. There is a small amount of retained cortex on the proximal edge. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is convex due to a central bulb of percussion. The lithic retains some cortex and is therefore a secondary flake.

A complete flint Disk Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains one predominant negative scar and short parallel flaking to the distal and left hand edge. There is a small amount of retained cortex across the right hand edge. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly convex and retains a bulb of percussion at the proximal end with shallow ripples of percussion emanating from it. The lithic retains some cortex and is therefore a se…

Brown flint with cortex, scraper. A thin flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge to its curved end. Cortex is retained along the opposite long edge, possibly to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the working side. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Grey flint with cortex, scraper. A thick flake with a dished and rippled dorsal surface and with a bulb on its ventral side. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge at one end. The flint was subsequently heated, producing light crazing overall and a more limited hackled patch on the ventral side. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.
