County: North Lincolnshire

Copper alloy figurine. Solid cast figurine representing Eros/Cupid, probably from a group representing Venus and her attendants, rendered in Classicised naturalistic style. This suggests manufacture in a Romanised provincial context. The excellent condition, retaining all original surface detail, commends this as a 'find of note'. The subject is depicted as a naked winged boy, left arm extended with an open palm, and the right arm bent at the elbow with the forearm horizontal and fingers and thumb curled to accommodate an object, now lost. The legs are parted as if striding forward…

Grey flint with cortex scraper. A thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims the thicker end. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 35.0mm, Width: 15.5mm, Thickness: 9mm, Weight: 4.67gms

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint core fragment. A chip probably from the side of a core bearing the scars from the removal of broad flakes from one side by probably unidirectional working. All struck surfaces bear a misty patina indicating the subsequent exposure of the object to a calcareous environment. This is locally removed by probably adventitious later impacts. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Height: 22.2mm, Width: 33.6mm, Thickness: 12.6mm, Weight: 9.63gms

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Brown flint with cortex, possible debitage. Two small flakes, both with bulbar ventral surfaces. One flake has cortex trimmed from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike, leaving a concave scar. The other has a similarly concave dorsal surface but this is covered by the early stages of cortex formation which appears to pre-date the removal of the flake; this may indicate reuse of older debitage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Combined Weight: 5.14gms

Brown flint with cortex, scraper. A thin flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge to its curved end. Cortex is retained along the opposite long edge, possibly to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the working side. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Dark grey flint, appearing brown under transmitted light, with cortex; debitage. Two thin flakes, both bearing broad parallel flake removal scars on their dorsal sides. The dorsal side of the larger flake is uneven, while the smaller is a fragment bearing ripples originating from one side of a bulb. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Combined Weight: 9.66gms

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex in two out of three cases; possible debitage. Three small thick flakes, all with indications of flakes having been struck from their dorsal surfaces. The largest has a concave ventral surface, the others have bulbar ventral surfaces. The development of a creamy patina over all struck surfaces indicates the objects have endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Neolithic, 7000-2350BC. Combined Weight: 12.02gms

Grey flint with cortex; possible borer. A triangular flake with long narrow parallel flakes trimmed from the dorsal side and with a near-flat ventral surface. A dense white patina has formed over all struck surfaces, indicating the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The patina is locally disrupted by subsequent adventitious impacts. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 48.1mm, Width: 24.0mm, Thickness: 5.1mm, Weight: 6.23gms

Grey flint with cortex, scraper. A thick flake with a dished and rippled dorsal surface and with a bulb on its ventral side. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge at one end. The flint was subsequently heated, producing light crazing overall and a more limited hackled patch on the ventral side. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Flint core. A pyramidal core with a flat striking platform and scars all around from the removal of broad and narrow flakes by unidirectional working. A dense creamy patina overall indicates the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. The form might suggest either a Mesolithic or Neolithic date; the character of the dense patina may here point to an earlier point in that range. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Dark grey flint, appearing brownish under transmitted light, with thin skin or cortex, possibly collected from the East coast; debitage. An irregular flake with a dished and rippled dorsal surface and a pronounced bulb on the ventral surface. It is uncertain whether a hollowed edge may represent the deliberate provision of a notch or adventitious damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.
