County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-rectangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface is convex and is covered by retained cortex. The left hand edge has short parallel flaking. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is concave and has ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. The lithic retains a large amount of cortex and is therefore a primary flake. The flint is dark grey in colour, the cortex is light brown. Length: 41.85mm, Width: 24.90mm, Thic…

A complete flint Thumbnail Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and concavo-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains covering scaled flaking. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly concave with ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint is grey in colour with some dark grey inclusions. Length: 25.10mm, Width: 20.89mm, Thickness: 8.02mm, Weight: 5.9g.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Northamptonshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains one predominant negative scar and short parallel flaking to the distal and left and right hand edges. There is a small amount of retained cortex on the proximal edge. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is convex due to a central bulb of percussion. The lithic retains some cortex and is therefore a secondary flake. The flint is grey in colour with dark grey inclusions throughout.…

A complete flint Disk Scraper of Neolithic date (3450-1500 BC). The lithic is sub-ovate in plan and plano-convex in section. The dorsal surface contains one predominant negative scar and short parallel flaking to the distal and left hand edge. There is a small amount of retained cortex across the right hand edge. All edges except the blunted proximal edge have fine semi-abrupt retouch. The ventral surface is slightly convex and retains a bulb of percussion at the proximal end with shallow ripples of percussion emanating from it. The lithic retains some cortex and is therefore a se…

Grey flint with cortex scraper. A thick flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims the thicker end. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 35.0mm, Width: 15.5mm, Thickness: 9mm, Weight: 4.67gms

Record ID: NLM-36CBBE
Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint core fragment. A chip probably from the side of a core bearing the scars from the removal of broad flakes from one side by probably unidirectional working. All struck surfaces bear a misty patina indicating the subsequent exposure of the object to a calcareous environment. This is locally removed by probably adventitious later impacts. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Height: 22.2mm, Width: 33.6mm, Thickness: 12.6mm, Weight: 9.63gms

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Brown flint with cortex, possible debitage. Two small flakes, both with bulbar ventral surfaces. One flake has cortex trimmed from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike, leaving a concave scar. The other has a similarly concave dorsal surface but this is covered by the early stages of cortex formation which appears to pre-date the removal of the flake; this may indicate reuse of older debitage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Combined Weight: 5.14gms

Brown flint with cortex, scraper. A thin flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge to its curved end. Cortex is retained along the opposite long edge, possibly to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the working side. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 33mm, Width: 17.2mm, Thickness: 6.1mm, Weight: 2.95gms

Dark grey flint, appearing brown under transmitted light, with cortex; debitage. Two thin flakes, both bearing broad parallel flake removal scars on their dorsal sides. The dorsal side of the larger flake is uneven, while the smaller is a fragment bearing ripples originating from one side of a bulb. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Combined Weight: 9.66gms

Grey flint with cortex, scraper. A thick flake with a dished and rippled dorsal surface and with a bulb on its ventral side. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge at one end. The flint was subsequently heated, producing light crazing overall and a more limited hackled patch on the ventral side. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Dark grey flint, appearing brownish under transmitted light, with thin skin or cortex, possibly collected from the East coast; debitage. An irregular flake with a dished and rippled dorsal surface and a pronounced bulb on the ventral surface. It is uncertain whether a hollowed edge may represent the deliberate provision of a notch or adventitious damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Record ID: SF-35394B
Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete polished flint axehead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-2500 BC. It survives relatively intact despite some damage to the cutting edge and extensive breakage to the butt, the latter possibly relating to hafting and subsequent use. In form, it demonstrates characteristic gently expanding sides with a broadly lenticular section, that transition into a convex cutting edge. Manufactured on a fine-grained piece of mottled light greyish flint, the surfaces of the axe are completely smooth and polished-with all removal scars and primary reduction negatives obliterated. L…
