Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Roman copper-alloy composite double-disc brooch (c. AD100-c. 200). Due to breaks and abrasion at the edges, the disc is now sub-circular in plan with traces of 4 flat knops equi-distant around the edge. In the centre there is a rivet hole which on the reverse holds in place a bar with a catchplate at one terminal and two semi-circular perforated lugs at the other. The lugs form the hinge for the pin which is now missing. The outer face of the brooch has linear striations which are possibly decoration rather than accidental. This surface also has traces of a white allo…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable incomplete cast copper alloy Roman strap end. The strap end has a narrowed neck and small shoulders which run into broadly parallel sides, with a strap split that runs almost the entire length of the surviving object. Linear and dot decoration and transverse scores across the neck section. There is a singular copper rivet through the head end. This may be a damaged example of a nail-cleaner strap-end, a category of artefact discussed by Eckardt and Crummy (2006), although if so it is a large example of the type. No exact parallel could be found for this piece which is proba…

Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete, unusual, copper-alloy late Roman or early Saxon hanging pendant or dress fitting. Looped shank, long stem widens to elongated oval plate. Ring and dot decoration on both sides down the stem and on plate. This does not appear to be a cosmetic or toilet spoon as the ovoid section is not at all bowled. Having a suspension loop and being decorated on both sides suggests it is some type of decorative pendant - possibly for a horse harness, although no direct parallels could be found. Suggested date AD 300-900.
