A worn, incomplete copper-alloy early-medieval (mid-late Anglo-Saxon) ansate brooch of Weech type XI dating to the 9th-10th centuries. It is missing its pin but is otherwise complete. The brooch is an elongate rectangle in form with a curved central bow and flattened terminals. The front face has incised decoration in the form of two transverse ribs at either terminal (at the end and just before the bow), and four vertical ribs at the top of the bow. A small, copper-alloy, early-medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) small long brooch, dating c. AD480-550, complete except for the pin which no longer survives. The brooch is formed of a rectangular head undecorated except for an outer border composed of small punched dots. The arched, short and rounded bow is decorated with a slightly raised centrally-located vertical rib. A shallow lozenge-shaped foot formed of a flat upper panel and a thicker, moulded pointed terminal decorated with two groups of horizontal ribbing. A possible Early Medieval lead gaming piece, or a possible weight of uncertain date. The object is five sided and pyramid shaped. 18.3mm wide at the base, and 9.5mm wide at the top.12.9mm high. The object has a central circular performation. It weighs 17.96g. The object is incomplete missing a fragment near the base. Many similar objects have been found at Torksey (Hadley & Richards, Antiquaries Journal, 2016) and are identified as Viking gaming pieces, presumably used in the board game of Hnefetafl and several have been recorded on the database.
