Cast lead or lead alloy bi-convex decorated spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD); most probably medieval date (AD 1300-1550). Object type: SOCKETED AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast bronze (copper alloy) socketed axe of Later Bronze Age date (1000 - 800 BC). The axe is incomplete; it is missing the mouth and upper part of the socket including the loop. Due to the damage classification is difficult. It is likely that this axe fits within the socketed axe typology probably associated with the Wilburton metalworking traditions (phase X) and earlier phases of the Ewart Park tradition (phase XII). This corresponds to Needham's (1996) Period 6-7 circa 1000-800 CAL. BC. The axe is broadly sub-rectangular in plan with a slightly expanded / flared c…

Object type: FERRULE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible ferrule, bead or ring from the late Bronze Age. The ring was found relatively close to a Bronze Age chisel of Ewart Park/Llyn Fawr date (NMS-523D79) and matches it very closely in colouration and patina. The object is 9.5mm long and annular in cross section with a 17mm outside diameter. One end is flat but the other is curved on its outside edge diameter and slightly lipped internally. The lipping is coincident with a flattened cross section suggesting it has been impacted at these points. With this exception the object has a smooth moulded surface suggesting it …

A Roman Colchester derivative Polden Hill brooch type, dating to circa AD 80-120. The spring mechanism, axis bar, pin, catch-plate and foot are missing. The copper alloy brooch has semi-cylindrical undecorated wings with damaged wing caps. At the centre of the upper edge of the head presumably there would have been a perforated lug to secure the spring which is now missing. This is visible by the remains of a stepped projection. The head is angular in profile. At the reverse of the head is a rectangular shaped recess. The bow tapers to a blunt broken terminal. The foot and catch pl…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy circular mount that that depicts an angel with its wings outstretched to either side. The detail on the oval face is achieved by cutting a series of deep V-section groves; in each of the groves a series of tiny transverse ridges that are probably the result of repeated hammer blows on the cutting tool to cut the channel. The eyes are shown by a deep double horizontal channel with a finer smaller grove in between. A straight double groove runs down the centre of the face to accentuate the nose. At the base of the nose are two transverse lines that form the mouth. Flaking th…
