A sheet copper-alloy fragment of a mount with inscribed decoration. The mount is sub-rectangular in plan and broken irregularly at both ends. Along one longer edge, the mount is folded and curves slightly towards the reverse. On the front face is an inscribed motif possibly representing a heart-shaped buckle with tongue and entwined straps. The motif is repeated along the length of the mount in reverse. Copper alloy nummus of the House of Valentinian (AD 364 - 378) (Reece Period 19), possibly a contemporary copy. Obverse: [ ... ], Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: (SECVRITAS REI PVBLICAE), Victory advancing left holding wreath and palm branch. Mintmark appears to be - // CO[N] which is not recorded for the Mint of Arles. The coin appears slightly crude and might be a copy. Copies of nummi of the House of Valentinian are known from the region, notably in Wiltshire and Somerset.
