A Roman copper-alloy Colchester derivative 'Dolphin' type brooch, dating from the 1st century AD. The bow is D-shaped in cross section, and the wings comprise a horizontal half-cylinder with two pairs of moulded circumferential grooves on the upper surfaces. One of the wings is broken about halfway across, and the spring and pin are missing. A double pierced lug is situated at the centre of the head's underside, and both this and the hollow behind the wings contain iron corrosion from the missing axis bar and spring. Probable Medieval to Post Medieval (mid 12thto 19thcentury) lead or lead alloy stylus or writing lead: The object is sub-circular in section and tapers to a blunt point at one terminal and at the other it domed. The surface of the stylus has a light brown coloured patina. It measures 53.73mm long, 8.03mm diameter and weighs 18.97g. Styli of lead are known to have been in use from the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods. Iron and copper alloy styli are more likely to date to the Roman and Early Medieval period (Geake pers comm). Roman (mid 1stto mid 2ndcentury) Developed T-shaped brooch: The wings are semi-cylindrical with perforated, incomplete, and off-set wing caps. At the upper edge there is an integral, incomplete head loop. The axis bar, spring and pin are missing. Post Medieval (17/18th centuries) cast copper alloy double ended seal matrix: Both ends of the matrix are oval in shape, one larger than the other. The larger one depicts what appears to be a double-headed eagle and the other possibly a bust with a beaded halo. The stem between the two matrices has a flat point quatrefoil with a central perforation. The surface of the artefact has red copper corrosion, an abraded surface and traces of a mid green patina.
