Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Incomplete and very badly distorted medieval copper alloy outer frame from a composite harness pendant. Only upper part is present, including the suspension loop and the copper alloy spindle on which the inner pendant would have swung. The survival of the spindle is surprising given that one end has been wrenched out of its position in the frame. The complete frame would have formed an elaborate sexfoil or quatrefoil, both quite common forms, e.g. WILT-33ABB2 and SUR-52F159. Two minute specks of metal coating are evident. Original dimensions cannot be calculated. 13th - 14th century.
