Roman lead sling shot, probably dating from the 1st century AD. The artefact is biconical, tapering to a sharp point at one end and a more rounded point at the other. The surfaces are convex. An assemblage of over 100 lead Roman sling-shots, found at the same farm as BH-BF5521 (a short distance to the south-east of the Roman town of Verulamium), is discussed by Greep (1987: 183-200), who suggests a mid 1st century date, based on associated early military equipment (ibid: 184). Although such objects have been found at sites throughout Roman Britain, it is noteworthy that of the f…

Sixpence of Elizabeth I dating from 1577. Was 1576, but number '6' was punched over with 7. Third/fourth issue. Mintmark: eglantine. The change in date from 76 to 77 is due to the die having been put into use at a later date as was the mark (in this case an eglantine) which dates the coin and not the actual date and the date was added when the die was engraved and the mark added as the die was about to be put into operation. An almost complete copper-alloy button and loop fastener dating from the Roman period, c. AD100-200. Probably Wild's type 5b. The fastener is composed of a triangular loop and a circular head, both of which are incomplete. The head is disc-shaped and has an additional moulding on top which may have, at one time, held enamel, but there is none left. All surfaces show heavy abrasion and the edges are very worn. Other than that, the object is in fair condition. A circular sectioned shank extends straight down from the reverse of the boss, close to one edge, and splits into two arms …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy awl or tracer, probably Iron age or Roman date (100 BC - AD 350). Similar tools are thought to be used for leather working, although they could also function as punches / gravers for metalworking. The awl has a tapering (pyramidical) blade of sub-rectangular section turning circular near the point, and a rectangular sectioned tang. The section of the tang is much smaller and the upper blade of the awl acted as a stop for the handle; this would have ensured that the handle did not 'bite back' and split whilst in use. Such a stop also ensured that all the pressure applied…

Probably a Roman knife handle or part of a Roman knife handle, made from cast copper alloy, possibly dating from the 1st-2nd century AD. The handle is in two fragments which join at the bag. There would have been an organic or ferrous component between the two halves, possibly the tang of the knife. The tang and blade are now missing. There does not seem to be a pommel or knife cap. The two parts of the handle are convex or possibly angular: they have made up a hexagonal handle. Their inside is plain and the outside is covered in very small moulded cells, which are either square (alon…
