The foot and lower part of the bow of a copper-alloy Roman bow brooch (c. AD 100-200).
The bow, 7.0mm in width at the top and 5.8mm in width at the bottom, has a flat back and front with the sides shaped into two steps creating a broad central raised strip on the front flanked on each side by two narrower steps running down the length of the bow. An incomplete cast copper-alloy sword or dagger chape of probable Medieval or early Post-Medieval date, c. 1200-1550. The chape is broaldy conical, with an elongated profile that tapers from a sub-rectangular mouth to a pointed lower end. The chape has been manufactured crudely out of rolled sheet metal, which just below its opening demonstrates a number of rivet holes for securing the chape to the base of the original leather scabbard. A complete lead-alloy weight of uncertain date. The weight is crudely formed; sub-conical with a circular base which tapers to an irregular rounded apex. A central perforation is present from the apex through to the base.
The metal has a mid-brown patina and is worn. The weight is 30.1mm tall, 17.4mm in diameter and weighs 30.3g.
Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely. Therefore, due to a lack of contextual evidence and any diagnostic features it is not possible to date this object any more …
