A complete copper alloy toggle of Roman date (late 1st to 3rd century AD). The object is a dumbbell type and is composed of two integral hemispherical terminals joined by a central circular shaft. Similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Database: YORYM-19E0A8, SWYOR-72CC15A, NARC-4C2B74 and NCL-DD6E92. This example has a high tin content which gives the metal a silvery appearance; in part this is why this has been dated to the Roman period and not earlier.
