Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy probably Roman balance or steelyard arm. It is formed from a long strip of metal rolled into a circular cross-sectioned tube. It becomes slightly flattened towards one end, culminating in a break, which appears to have been a loop originally. There appears to be a break across the other end too. Just below this break, to one side, is a very small protruding knop. It has a fine green patina. The object seems likely to be a balance arm, possibly of Roman date. It is very similar in form to two examples from Colchester, the former a balance and the latter a …

An incomplete copper alloy Roman finger ring. Only the outer part of the ring survives. It has a central raised oval bezel. This is damaged, but appears to be undecorated. The jetton is slightly concave on the reverse and convex on the obverse. The edges of the jetton are abraded. The introduction of the thick piedfort jettons during the 15th century appears to have resulted from the popularisation of a new method for performing the calculations for manual accountancy; the Tree of Numeration method (Mitchiner, 249).
