Gilt cast copper alloy 'lyre-shaped' belt chape with openwork frame and integral hollow strap sleeve or box plate. The plate's outer face is incised with the letters 'Ihc' denoting the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus, IHΣΟΥΣ, between two raised ribbed borders consisting of two parallel lines each. The plate has two iron rivets still partly intact about 1 mm in from the outer edge and 10 mm apart, which would have held the leather strap in place. Medieval (13th to 14th centuries) shield shaped harness mount: The copper alloy harness fitting is shield-shaped and has decoration on the outer face in the form of a probable lion passant with the tail entwining downwards the lower corner of the mount. The lion is inlaid with white enamel. The surface is slightly encrusted with a probably clay soil, but there are traces of gilding on the surface. A double layer of cortex remains across around 90% of the dorsal face and is visible through to the ventral face on the distal end and both side margins.
