Middle Saxon to Late Saxon copper alloy strap end with two secondary iron rivets through the split end, the original attachment edge and rivets having been lost. Moulded decoration is confined to the ears and nostrils of the animal-head terminal. The rest of the ornament is engraved and some was once inlaid with niello. The main body is taken up by a cross with concave-sided triangular arms and a circular centre, all set within a frame. In the pointed oval spaces within the arms are possibly zoomorphic motifs of uncertain form, reserved on a niello ground. Thomas 2003, Class A, Type 2…

Broad period: IRON AGE

Late Iron Age copper alloy circular openwork mount, probably of 1st century AD date The mount is fragmentary, represented by a little under half and was circular (with a diameter of 45.9mm, a surviving width of 25.7mm, a thickness of 2.7mm and a weight of 6.2g). The mount has broken across a diameter, with a possible tear at the centre. The openwork decoration appears to have been of 'whirligig' form arranged around a triskele and incorporating pelta and sub-triangular apertures, with two concave sides and a convex side against the outer frame. The design was enhanced with groove…

The oval domed head (28.7mm long, 23.9mm wide and 10.6mm deep) appears to be inverted in relation to the loop being at the top. The circular loop is integral and rectangular sectioned (with an internal diameter of 10.1mm, an external diameter of 15.5mm and 3.6mm thick) and has no surviving applied decoration. Below the lo…
