A Post Medieval lead alloy leather worker's or sail maker's palm guard. The object is oval in plan and has a convex section; the base is flat. The upper rounded face has a circular depression (16mm in diameter), to take the points of needles. The guard would have been wrapped in leather or cloth, with a hole to line up with the circular depression in the guard, and then strapped to the hand to protect the palm when forcing needles through very coarse material. Similar examples of palm guards can be seen in Bailey, p 65, number 1 - 4, which are dated from the 18th to the 19th centuries.
