Cast lead trade weight, ovate in plan, and sub-rectanular in profile and section. The central hole is ovate in plan and cylindrical in profile but irregular and measures 7 mm roughly in diameter. The hole is large and irregular so the object was more likely used as a weight rather than a whorl, as it would not have held the spindle or balanced well. It also has a flat base so it could have been used as a pan weight. The edge around the aperture is recessed on both faces, which might be from wear. The weight weighs 12.28 g which is equivalent to a little less than half an avoirdupois o…

Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fargment from a cast, copper alloy, harness pendant of probable 14th-century (c.1150 - c.1450) date. The fragment comes from the top of the pendant, and consists of the a pierced swivel loop, and the upper section of the pendant; the lower half is lost due to an old break. The shape of the pendant body is difficult to determine due to heavy abrasion and bending, but the top seems to raise slightly towards the loop, and the right corner is rounded so it was probably shield shaped. There is active light green corrosion all over the fragment with traces of gilt in the recess of the lin…

County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy double-looped annular buckle, circular in plan and plano-convex in profile. The upper face of the buckle is decorated with recessed rectangles at oblique angles, alternating with raised panels, but they are quite worn so that they look more ovate in sections. This creates an effect described by Margeson (1993, 28; ref.159), discussing a parallel, as 'castellated'. The central strap bar divides the annular frame into two D-shaped loops and still retains its pin. The pin is 24 mm long, 4 mm wide and 1.2 mm thick. The pin bar is trapezoidal in section with th…
