Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall

Fragment of a punched copper alloy rectangular shoe buckle frame, decorated with alternating scrolls in relief over a background of annulets and within a border of a line of pellets. Both surfaces appear to be lacquered which has survived well but the rest of the frame is missing with only a corner surviving. Read (1988) illustrates a rectangular shoe buckle and a knee buckle with a similar pattern on page 176, nos.1177 & 1179, which are dated from c.1720-1790.

Record ID: CORN-DA72ED
Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy double-looped annular buckle, circular in plan and plano-convex in profile. The upper face of the buckle is decorated with recessed rectangles at oblique angles, alternating with raised panels, but they are quite worn so that they look more ovate in sections. This creates an effect described by Margeson (1993, 28; ref.159), discussing a parallel, as 'castellated'. The central strap bar divides the annular frame into two D-shaped loops and still retains its pin. The pin is 24 mm long, 4 mm wide and 1.2 mm thick. The pin bar is trapezoidal in section with th…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped shoe buckle frame. It is sub-oval in plan and plano-convex in section, with a simple, narrowed, central bar. The frame has a rounded end and trefoil side with curved bifid projections either side of the expanded edge where the strap bar terminates. Within this expanded section, the strap bar has an incised line on either side of the bar terminus on both sides of the frame. These lines make the frame appear raised between the lines, but this section is flush with the rest of the frame. The other loop of the frame is now missing but would have …
